Russia’s “kuzya174” Wins Main Event
The premier tournament on the schedule was the $50 buy-in, $500,000 GTD ChampionChip Main Event. It featured numerous starting flights throughout the month.
Each Day 1 starting flight for the ChampionChip Main Event started players with 10,000 in chips and played a dozen 10-minute levels. Satellites for those flights started for as little as $0.50.
All told, the tournament attracted 8,130 players who rebought 930 times for a 9,060-entry field.
On Monday, August 16, more than 1,400 players returned for Day 2 action and to play down to a winner.
Of those, the top 1,000 players got a piece of the $500K prize pool including the following -
- “gambl3rinh0” (124th - $650)
- “Hcostea” (79th - $900)
- “FloatingLand” (55th - $1,000)
- “BrunoZika1” (30th - $1,250)
- “SutedAces” (17th - $1,550)
- Final table bubble boy “ac3play” (10th - $2,150)
The action was streamed on the 888pokerTV Twitch channel while live updates were also offered by PokerNews. According to the latter, Russia’s “kuzya174” began the final table with the chip lead while Leonardo “leosouza9” Souza sat second in chips.
Fittingly, those two wound up battling in heads-up play for nearly 30 minutes in a back-and-forth affair.
- After 8 hours and 39 minutes of play, the final hand took place in Level 44 (800/000/1,600,000/200,000)
- Souza raised to 3.2 million and “kuzya174” called to see a 10♥6♥4♠ flop.
- The latter checked and then moved all-in after the former bet.
- Souza called off with the A♦Q♠ and was up against the Q♥2♥ flush draw of “kuzya174”
The 6♦ turn was of no consequence. But the 7♥ river was as “kuzya174” made a heart flush for the win, which mean Souza had to settle for second place and $43,500 in prize money.
